VISION
Kailua High School creates an accepting and supportive community to nurture growth in every student, empowering them to make positive changes and adopt to the ever-changing world around them.

MISSION

Kailua High School is located in the residential subdivision of Pōhākupu on Oahu’s Windward side of the Ko’olau Mountain Range. Our school is over 60 years old and is one of four public high schools on the Windward side. We serve students from a portion of Kailua town and a majority of the Waimānalo community. We are an ethnically diverse population where the community is predominantly Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, and Asian.

Kailua High School is in a state of transformation and we began this process by revamping our Vision and Mission statements in SY 2021-22. After analyzing data and gathering input from the school community and staff, it was determined that we would change our school model to provide more opportunities to implement Project Based Learning (PBL) and to lay the foundation to develop academies which included making major changes to our bell schedule. The Ready to SURF Academy was established in SY 2021-22 and our Freshman Academy will launch in SY 2024-25. Our two pocket academies will pave the way for more academies in the future.

Students develop career-readiness with curricula framed by Career Pathways in Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources, Building and Construction, Cultural Arts, Media, and Entertainment, Health Services, Hospitality, Tourism, and Recreation, and Information, Technology, and Digital Transformation. Our Community Quest Learning Center provides opportunities for students to explore occupations of their choice and develop valuable career readiness skills by participating in an internship-like experience at a work site within their career pathway. We also offer unique learning experiences through courses such as Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), Hawaiian Language, Hawaiian Dance, Ethnic Studies, Philosophy, and Air Force JROTC. Lastly, with our new Natural Resources Science Building, students are able to take courses in Microbiology and Natural Resources.

To provide our students an opportunity to experience the rigor of college courses, we offer seven Advanced Placement courses. In addition, we partner with Windward Community College to offer a variety of Early College High School (ECHS) courses on our campus for dual credit. We are excited to further develop the Kaiapuni Program, Ahupua’a Pathway, Information Security Pathway and Hālau Hekili through this partnership. The Kaiapuni program provides a combination of ECHS and high school courses taught in both English and Hawaiian. We currently offer two certificates in Ahupua'a Systems: Indigenous Resource Management & Food Production and Information Security Specialist. These certificates are only comprised of ECHS coursework. Hālau Hekili integrates ECHS and high school courses taught both on campus and at Windward Community College and students will earn a Hawaiian Knowledge Innovation Certificate upon completion of this program.

Faculty and staff make a concerted effort to focus on quality student support. We nurture students’ intellectual, social, emotional, and physical growth through an array of services to enhance learning and success. Students in the Co-Taught General Education Setting are supported by a special education and general education teacher who work collaboratively to address the needs of all of the students within this setting. Our ParaProfessional Educator Program assists students in English, Science, and Math courses through providing specialized instruction to promote academic achievement. We also provide support to our parents/guardians and community members through our Family Resource Center (FRC). Our FRC offers all families with valuable resources and workshops to learn new ways to help students succeed, share knowledge, skills/talents, and experiences with others. We offer various co-curricular activities such as our Student Leadership Program, Math League, Marching Band, and an extensive athletic program that fields 19 sports and 56 teams. Furthermore, our partnership with the Pacific American Foundation provides our students with the opportunity to participate in free after school activities (Weightlifting, Sound Studio, Robotics, Creation Club, Hula, and Academic Support).

All students are required to take a weekly Personal Transition Plan/Leadership (PTP/L) course during their four years in high school. All faculty serve as a mentor-teacher for their PTP/L class throughout the four years. The purposes of the course are to help students plan for post-high school pursuits and to assist them in tracking their individual progress towards attaining personal, career, and academic goals. Upon their graduation from high school, each student will have a self-made portfolio that reflects four years of goal-setting and skill-building for career and life.
