Originally established in 1966 as an intermediate school, Kalāheo became a high school in 1973. The school's vision is a community of learners where individuals prepare for the challenges and opportunities in a diverse and global society. Its purpose is to prepare students for higher education, future employment, and responsible citizenship. Kalāheo supports its vision through a variety of avenues.
Kalāheo High School has a robust Career and Technical Education (CTE) program which includes an Academy of Media & Design focused on digital media broadcasting, and digital design, Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources, Culinary Arts, Engineering, and Residential & Commercial Construction. The CTE program highlights include consistent recognition for excellence at the Windward District Performance Based Assessments, works with over 20 different industry/community partners, and has begun the Early College journey with Windward Community College.
In 2016 and 2017 Kalāheo High School was recognized in The Washington Post's “America's Most Challenging High Schools” based upon the schools offering a rigorous college-level Advanced Placement academic experience for students. In 2023, US News and World Report Best Schools rated Kalāheo among the top five public schools on Oahu. Kalāheo has been recognized by the Hawaii P-20 as a top-performing school with AP exam takers scoring a 3 or better on AP exams. Kalāheo has also been recognized with a silver level of distinction on the AP School Honor Roll.
Kalāheo also offers numerous athletic programs for males and females, with over 50 teams competing in sports over the course of the school year. The schoolʻs success in athletics is highlighted by teams such as paddling, girlsʻ volleyball and softball, cross country, baseball, softball, swimming, water polo, track, wrestling, and air riflery.
Through these various opportunities, Kalāheo is able to cultivate a community of lifelong learners who will succeed in the global society.
